In a Library of Congress interview, Gendebien smeared the North Country workers he now wants to represent as unreliable drunks with domestic abuse, wage garnishment, custody and child-support problems. He said it was "hard to find one local person" without issues. When it surfaced, he pushed the Library of Congress to take it down.

Nieves wrote a piece titled "The Unholy Trinity: Racism, Capitalism and Mass Incarceration." In it she:
